NOVEMBER 2019 - JANUARY 2020
This is the story of Saguaro Music. How this got started and the crazy, better yet, the convoluted quest I have gotten myself into. Who knew that starting a small music business would be tough...
A HAPPY THANKSGIVING
It all started here! Thanksgiving 2019. That's a picture of my crazy family (pointing at my sleeping uncle) post Thanksgiving dinner. This is where the idea for Saguaro started. I was almost done with college.Had lots of great experiences that I wanted to bring back to my hometown. Give aspiring musicians an opportunity to shine and a creative outlet.
There were several ways I wanted to go with it. I enjoyed watching shows bands put on (like the two my friend are in, see bellow).
SAGUARO MUSIC MANAGEMENT
The original idea was to help my friends get promoted and help manage their shows. This came from my friend not really having a constant knowledge of their upcoming gigs or if they wanted to play with a band. I would help represent artists and bands and be their manager (for a small percentage of their gig pay).
Since my friend knew and was in lots of bands it was a perfect way to help create a system for awesome upcoming musicians.
The issue, people are looking for experienced managers and you have to be available to the artists you want to represent.
All I want to do is help everyone with their music, so what else could I do?
SAGUARO RECORDS
We would help these musicians produce and distribute the music. Andrew, who now wanted to be involved (pic on right) with the business end of things was ready to rock and roll.
He knew that the bands he was playing with wanted to record, but we didn't have any money to help them with that.
Which leads to the next part of the business.
"The goal was to produce and make records left and right. To become a music factory..."
SAGUARO MUSIC CO.- RECORDING STUDIOS
By adding Co. at the end I wanted to make our company name to make it seem like we were a sound and music factory. Just producing and making records left and right. We had some of the gear and the start up was modest. Who knew there was so much gear that was not necessary (we can argue about that later).
Everything was going to be run out of my little MacBook Air.
That was our set up; some cheap foam hung around, a foldable table, speakers, some headphones, a 4 xlr/line in DAW interface, and a wannabe producer ready to record some music. Even though digital doesn't compare to analog equipment, a lot of people get started this way. And if you know how to use it well, then the audio can sound well.
That's how Saguaro started. Join our newsletter to get updates on this on going quest at Saguaro Music. Thanks for reading and until next time.
